Dog Safe Plants that Repel Mosquitoes

Keeping Mosquitoes Away: Dog-Safe Plant Repellents

Warmer weather is a treat for us and our pups. But, warm weather brings the buzz of mosquitos, which has the potential to ruin a summer night if not properly prepared. Not only are they annoying, they can lead to many complications, like itchy bites and hot spots, to heart worm disease and West Nile Virus, and more.

Unfortunately, many of the effective repellents we use are highly toxic to our furry family members. Luckily, we can safely and naturally repel mosquitos with a little landscaping. We have created a list of six dog-safe plants that naturally repel mosquitos.

Basil

Unlike other insect-repelling herbs, basil doesn’t have to be crushed to release the scent and oils that keep mosquitoes away. There are a wide variety of basil plants, all of which provide some relief from the flying pests, but lemon basil and cinnamon basil are the most effective.

Catnip

We all know cats love catnip. But, most don’t know that mosquitoes absolutely hate it! Some studies have actually shown catnip to be more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET, a dangerous chemical used in many bug repellents. Catnip is easy to grow and can be planted in pots around the yard. Just remember, while you’re repelling mosquitoes, you might be attracting the neighborhood cats.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm, also known as horsemint, is another hardy, easy-to-grow plant that naturally repels mosquitoes. Thriving well in both sunny spots or in the shade, this plant gives off a strong scent that mosquitoes hate.

Peppermint

Peppermint’s strong, minty aroma, mosquitoes stay clear of peppermint plants. However, because these plants tend to grow aggressively, you may prefer planting them in pots rather than planting in the ground.

Rosemary

Another pet-safe option for naturally repelling fleas, that’s also useful in the kitchen, is rosemary. Unpleasant to both mosquitoes and other flying insects, rosemary is quite versatile.

The plants listed above aren’t the only ones that naturally repel mosquitoes – but they ARE the plants most effective against insects AND safe for dogs. Always remember when landscaping to be mindful of plants which may be toxic for your four-legged friends. Citronella, while highly effective against mosquitoes, is deadly to dogs, as are Geraniums, certain varieties of Marigolds, and Garlic plants.

What dog-friendly plants do you keep around the house or in the yard to repel insects? We would love to hear from you.
