Common Myths about E-Collars

We’ll admit it, e-collars sometimes get a bad reputation – but that doesn’t mean it’s validated. In this article, we’re going to break down some common myths about e-collars. So that, if used correctly with professional help, you can feel confident that your pup is receiving safe and appropriate e-collar training.

Myth 1: E-Collars Hurt Dogs

An E-Collar provides a simple shock that is comparable to when you create static friction and shock yourself. Is it annoying? Yes. But does it cause you horrible pain? No. It’s used to get your dog’s attention, not punish them into submission. In fact, modern e-collars are made with safety mechanisms that prevent your pup from being shocked at too high or long of a rate that would cause them harm. Some e-collars are not even made with shock technology, and instead, use tones and vibrations that catch your dog’s attention

As pet parents, we never want to see our furry friend’s in pain – so the word “shock collar” can sometimes be off-putting. Before ever using an e-collar on your pup, we always recommend you testing it out on your own wrist. Something as simple as that can help alleviate any worry you may have about e-collars after feeling how minimal the stimulation they give off is.

Myth 2: E-Collars Will Make Your Dog Afraid of You

Canines live with a “pack mentality” and respect a strong leader whom they can please. E-collars allow your dog to receive immediate feedback so they can fix their behavior in hopes of impressing you. E-collars are never used as punishment or to create a fear mentality. They’re instead used alongside positive reinforcements, such as treats and verbal praise, that help guide your pooch.

Myth 3: Electronic Training Doesn’t Work

E-collars aren’t just a machine you can put on your dog that will instantly make them obedient. You have to know how to properly train your dog with an e-collar for it to be effective – otherwise, it’s pretty much useless. When using these collars correctly, they tend to actually be easier than other training methods since they provide your pup with clear, immediate feedback. Your canine is left with less confusion and more solid feedback that won’t leave you both frustrated.

Myth 4: You Dog Must Always Wear Their E-Collar

E-collars are not intended to be used for the entirety of your furry friend’s life. With consistent and comprehensive training, your dog will no longer need their e-collar. Because like stated above, they’re used to give feedback, and after successful training, an obedient dog will require little to no feedback.

Myth 5: Electronic Training is a “Quick Fix” You Can Do Yourself

As we’ve mentioned a few times, you need to know how to use an e-collar correctly for it to be effective. Even though these collars are not made to envoke punishment, if used unproperly, they can create an immense amount of confusion and fear in your pooch. Which is why it’s much easier and safer to leave that up to the professionals. At Sit Means Sit San Antonio, our trainers can work with your dog while you’re at work or on vacation – or you can see for yourself exactly how the process works through private training. E-collars usually come with many misconceptions. But, as stated repetitively above, when used correctly, all e-collars are is an effective way to get your dog’s attention. They don’t cause pain or invoke fear – but simply help your pup understand what you are trying to teach them.
