Why Dogs Love Squeaky Toys

Why Dogs Love Squeaky Toys

If you’re a pet owner, it probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise that most dogs love squeaky toys. But why do our furry friends go crazy over that high-pitched squeak (that sometimes makes you a little crazy as well)? Let’s find out!

Canine Instincts

As the descendants of wolves, dogs share many similar characteristics with them—one of those being the drive to attack when confronted with prey, or prey-like noises. Squeaky toys make a noise that can be compared to that of prey when they are frightened or injured, which can put Fido’s hunting instincts into overdrive. When the toy stops squeaking, this lets your pooch know that they have essentially “killed” their prey and that they can cease attacking.

Receiving Immediate Gratification

Another theory people have is that our canines love squeaky toys because they offer them immediate gratification from the sound. The continuous auditory feedback that squeaky toys produce when squeezed and played with lets your pup know that their bit is significant enough to cause a reaction. In a way, it’s as if to them that the squeaky toy is encouraging and applauding their efforts.

The Benefits of Squeaky Toys

Just like with people, dogs receive health benefits from playing and partaking in activities they enjoy. Besides the fact that playing with squeaky toys can provide Fido with a bit of exercise, they can also help mentally stimulate your dog by evoking their natural instincts. When a dog has an outlet for these actions, it can also help reduce the possibility of them taking this behavior out on your furniture or possessions. When training, squeaky toys can also be extremely useful when trying to get your pup’s attention or providing them with positive reinforcement.

However, always be sure to keep an eye on your pup’s squeaky toys. If you notice any ripping or damage, be sure to replace them, so the squeaker inside the toy doesn’t become a choking hazard.

Squeaky toys can be your pup’s best friend – they provide them with an outlet for physical and mental stimulation – plus, they can help keep them from ripping up your stuff.
