Does My Dog Know How to Swim?
The “doggie” paddle is typically associated with dogs, however not all dogs know how to do it.
Some dogs can swim because they are natural born swimmers and they swim as part of their training to be retrievers and gun dogs. There are other dogs that don’t do well in water because they physically cannot manage to stay afloat and swim.
Dogs can be separated into 3 categories: those that swim naturally those that can be taught to swim, and then a group that will never be able to swim unless life jackets are provided.
Root of the Behavior
Naturally bigger dogs – Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Irish Setters, and Water Spaniels – are natural swimmers. They have strong limbs and were bred to retrieve in the water. Small feature dogs – Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Bulldogs – are either not physically geared to swim or tire easily in the water. With the right encouragement and temperament, some dogs can be taught to swim. Make sure to safely teach your dog and start them with a life vest until they get the hang of it.
Encourage the Behavior
The dogs that know how to swim get it from their ancestral background and through successful breeding. Some dogs love to swim and others thrash in the water for survival needs. If your family gathers near water mostly, it can be rewarding to teach your dog how to swim or be comfortable near bodies of water. Some dogs have been seen diving off of boats and riding on surfboards. Near large bodies of water it is advised to get your dog used to a life jacket.
Solutions and Considerations
Your dog will let you know if they are comfortable or not around water. You can always look up if you breed of dog is among the water safe breeds. Teaching them will take a lot of encouragement and support. Make sure they know the safe way in and out of the water, then hold them under their tummy to help them float and be supportive. Your dog may take time to get used to the idea of paddling in the water, but it will be a comfortable experience. Never force swimming on your dog.
Make sure you are always understanding your dog and their level of comfort near water before bringing them near large bodies of water to swim or even just sit along the shoreline.
