Is Cancer More Commonly Found in Purebreds?

Over time, we have learned that mutts tend to be healthier than purebreds in many ways. A recent study has displayed that purebreds develop cancer more often than mixed-breed dogs. Here is everything you need to know about the potential of cancer in your dog.

The Study

Nationwide released a study to determine if cancer was more common in purebreds than in mixed-breed dogs. From 2015 to 2021, the company examined over 1.6 million cancer claims from dog owners. However, the study was a single-variable analysis meaning it did not control for additional factors aside from breed.

The Findings

They found that purebreds were 1.9 times more likely to file a cancer claim than other dogs. They also looked further into purebreds to discover which were at the highest risk for cancer. Boxers, Beagles, and Golden Retrievers were at the highest risk, while Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, and French Bulldogs were the lowest.

Prevention

Even if these were the results, dog owners should still prevent cancer and undergo screenings at the vet. Limiting exposure to environmental risks like smoke, sunlight, and a poor diet can help limit cancer in your puppy.
