Tips for a Safe & Fun Beach Day with Your Dog

The hot weather is upon us! This means it’s time to pack the sunscreen and catch some sun rays with your furry friend. To make sure your dog has as much fun as you, here are some tips and tricks to ensure a safe and fun experience:

1. Make sure the beach is pet-friendly

Before you pack your belongings for the beach, make sure you find beaches that are pet-friendly. It is important to abide by local rules and to ensure that your dog can have as much fun as you. There should be a few within driving distance of Volusia County, such as Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet, Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach, and Rockefeller Drive to Milsap Road in Ormond Beach.

2. Bring sun and paw protection

As much as you want to protect your skin from harmful sun rays, we want the same for your dog. Yes, even dogs can get sunburn! It is important to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. Make sure to pay attention to areas with less fur, such as the ears, nose, and belly. Sand gets hot! To prevent burns on the paws, invest in booties or a protective wax to keep them safe.

3. Bring lots of water and treats

Dogs can have so much fun in the sun that they forget about their appetite and need for water. Fresh water is important for them to prevent overheating and heatstroke. It must be fresh! Also, a beach day is a perfect way to practice commands with your dog. Keep some treats to reward their positive behaviors.

4. Find a shady place to lay out

To keep your dog away from the sun, bring an umbrella or tent to rehydrate and relax in. Bring a few towels to lay on the hot sand for extra protection.

5. Keep an eye on your dog

Anything can happen with such a large body of water, especially when they’re choppy. It is important to know where your dog is always. If they want to go for a swim, stay with them in the water and provide a lifejacket for them. Make sure they don’t accidentally drink saltwater, as it’s not good for them.

6. Clean up after your dog

No one wants to step in poop! Bring doggy bags to pick up after your dog. Dog poop is also harmful to fish and other wildlife. It can also contaminate the soil and water. If you may have forgotten your bags at home, most pet-friendly beaches provide “mutt mitts.”

Taking your pup to the beach doesn’t have to be stressful! Follow these steps to have a fun and safe time at the beach with your canine companion.
