How To Teach Dogs Holding Place
One of the fundamental obedience skills we instill at Sit Means Sit is holding place, or holding sit, until released. Once mastered, the implied stay plays a major role in your Denver dog training as well as your daily home life. A dog that has mastered this, is prepared to move on to more advanced skills and it is much easier to control, even when faced with major distraction. Interested in learning more? Let’s take a look at the basics of teaching this skill.
The Early Stages of Training a Dog to Sit and Hold
When we first teach a dog to sit, it’s not uncommon for dog owners to step a few feet away and call the dog to come. This behavior teaches the dog to sit but also anticipate that any moment they will be called to ‘come’ or you will walk away and they will essentially be released. Rather than setting this precedent, we encourage our clients to teach their pet to hold place. When ready to release, rather than calling your dog, walk back over to them and actually touch them while giving the release command. By doing this, your dog’s anticipation level will be kept at bay when he or she sees you walking away. They will understand that they are expected to remain in place until you physically come back to them.
Mastering Keeping Your Dog in Place
Once your pup understand that they are expected to stay in place until released, virtually all of your obedience training will benefit. This basic skill will allow your dog to sit and relax during your training efforts. No more grappling for attention or wandering off at the first sign of distraction. Many of our clients who struggle to keep their pets from jumping on visitors are overjoyed when their best friend is able to hold place when guests arrive. It’s these simple yet game changing improvements that enable our clients to reclaim control.
