How To Correct Resource Guarding With Dogs
Does your dog show signs of aggression when you attempt to take a toy or bone away? Or perhaps they show their teeth when you approach during meal time? If so, rest assured that this is instinctive behavior. It does not necessarily mean a pup is going to take out their aggression, it simply means you need to work with them to correct the behavior. At Sit Means Sit South Denver, we are proud to offer award winning Lakewood and Highlands Ranch dog training programs. We often work with dogs and owners on correcting resource guarding and other unwanted behaviors. How do you correct resource guarding? Let’s take a closer look at the Sit Means Sit approach.
Work on Your Approach
If your pup tends to run away with their toy when you get within a certain distance, it’s important to teach them to associate your approach with something positive. One great way to do this is to approach with an even more appeal toy or treat. In trading your pup’s resource for something they love, they will begin to see your approach, while they are playing, as less of a threat to their favorite toy or resource.
How To Better Train Dogs During Meal Time
If your dog tends to show signs of dominance while eating, it’s important to work on correcting this behavior. Begin by approaching and gently petting them on the back as they enjoy their meal. Do this several times in a row until they seem to be comfortable with your presence. When they are no longer showing signs of aggression, take it a step further. Begin petting their neck and eventually their head as they eat. This slow progression will help your pup grow comfortable with being approached at meal time.
Release Commands
Release commands are an essential part of our Highlands Ranch dog training program. It’s important to help your pup understand that when they are instructed, they must release whatever it is they are holding or using. ‘Drop’ and ‘off’ are the two commands your pup will need to master. ‘Drop’ is used let your pup know that they need to release the resource they are holding at the time. ‘Off’ is used to let your dog know that they must get down from the piece of furniture or object they are guarding. By working with your dog on these commands, they will begin to understand what you are asking of them and cooperating without aggression.
Keep Toys Out of Reach
Yet another way to stop your dog from resource guarding is to keep toys out of the way when they are not being used. This helps your pup begin to associate toy play time with good behavior. They will feel less possessive of their toys and will be less likely to show aggression during play time.
