Training Tip for House Breaking Your Puppy

Puppy Training Lakewood: House BreakingHouse breaking is one of the fundamental steps in puppy training. Potty training teaches structure and sets the stage for your dog’s lifelong obedience training. If you have recently adopted a dog, we encourage you to read today’s post carefully. As your resident Lakewood puppy training experts, we are here to help you and your pup master the art of potty training.

Crating Your Puppy

Crating your pup is important for a number of reasons, including house breaking. Think of it as your pup’s personal space. While some dog owners fear that crating is inhumane, it’s actually quite the opposite. You will likely find that after a while, your pup will retire to their crate even when not instructed to do so. It more or less serves as their den. In addition to providing comfort and structure, your crate will teach bladder control. Because your pup will consider their crate home, they will instinctively control their bladder when inside. It is however important to ease them into this slowly. As you begin crate training, they should spend 20-30 at a time in their new home. Place them in their crate and allow them time to adjust. Though their puppy cries might be difficult to ignore, you will soon find that they are settling into their new crate comfortably.

Timing is Key

It is critical, especially when your pup’s bladder is still growing, to take them out to relieve themselves often. When you are home with your puppy, observe their behaviors and take them out accordingly. Most small pups will need to go out immediately after drinking water. Also remember to always take them directly out after they have been in their crate. This will teach structure and help them understand when it is appropriate to eliminate.

Praise

Praising your pup’s good behavior is essential in your dog training efforts, including as you house break them. Have small treats on hand to reward your pup after they have successfully gone potty in their designated area.
