Tips to Soothe Dogs Cold Symptoms

Suffering from a stuffy nose, coughing, and sniffling? You’re not the only one — dogs can get the common cold, too. If your dog seems to be sneezing or coughing, take them into the vet to make sure that there isn’t something more serious at hand. If they are diagnosed with a cold, there’s not much you can do to immediately cure them, but there are some home remedies that you can try to ease some of their discomfort. Check out our list of tips to soothe your dog’s cold symptoms.

Try Steaming

Steam helps open bronchial passages and keep them moist. It’s easy for us to hop in a hot shower and open up our airways, but it’s not quite as easy for our dogs. You can either steam up your bathroom with hot water and sit inside with your dog, or you can try using a humidifier to clear up their nasal canals. Using a humidifier might be more comfortable for your dog, especially because the bathroom steam can be quite hot and uncomfortable. They even have humidifiers shaped like dogs!

Aromatherapy for Dogs

Some essential oils can be very dangerous for dogs, especially when consumed. We recommend consulting your vet before using any essential oils, but pet-friendly essential oils could be helpful for soothing your dog’s congestion. Remember that dogs have stronger senses of smell than we do, so only a little is necessary to be effective. Using a deodorizing spray, which dilutes the essential oils, is an easy way to give your pet the essential oils they need without being harmful.

Chicken Broth or Soup

Chicken broth or soup is a great remedy for any cold. Whether you have a classic recipe from grandma or just want to heat up some bouillon cubes in water, your dog will appreciate the tasty broth and boost of electrolytes that they’ll get from the soup. Make sure soup isn’t too hot before serving, and use low-sodium broth. You should also make sure there are no onions or other dog-unfriendly ingredients in any soup.

Let Them Sleep

If your dog seems extra sleepy when they’re sick, you should try to let them rest! Limit their activity when possible, and try to be quiet around the house when they are sleeping. Find them an extra comfy place to snooze, whether that be a fluffy dog bed or their own corner of the couch. Sleep is one of the best and fastest ways for your dog to recover from a cold!

You may not be able to cure your dog’s cold, but you can sure try! These natural remedies are sure to ease your dog’s discomfort and make sure that they are back healthy and better than ever as soon as possible.
