Different Dog Sleeping Positions and What They Mean
Your dog’s sleeping habits can tell you a decent bit about how they feel. Below, we’ll discuss various dog sleeping positions and what they mean.
The Burrito
The burrito is when your dog sleeps with all their limbs tight against their body and all in the same direction. They look like a long, squishy burrito! This position isn’t too common, but it does tend to indicate that your dog is happy, content, and feels safe in their environment.
The Sistine Chapel
This is a variation of the classic back positions, but with one or all of your dog’s legs stretched forward and up! It’s quite a funny position to see, but it’s also positive. This position means that your dog has no problems being completely exposed. They feel happy and safe. You will typically see independent and calm dogs choose this position.
Look, Mom! I’m a Rug
This is an active position. It typically means your dog’s body heat is too high and they feel the need to cool down. A high-energy dog might also plop into this position during a game of fetch if they need a break. If this is your dog’s sleeping position, it means they’re ready to jump up at a moment’s notice!
The Bagel
The Bagel is iconic. It’s perhaps the most common sleeping position for dogs who are playful and energetic or who are still puppies. When they curl around their body like this, it means they are resting well, but they’re also ready to jump into action!
The Luge
The Luge is like a relaxed Sistine Chapel. Your dog might choose to lay flat on their back with their pudgy tummy and paws in the air. They might choose this out of the different sleeping positions as a way to stay cool. It’s also a way for your dog to express that they fully trust you and their environment.
I ate too much
As opposed to the Lion’s Pose, which is when your dog lies flat on their tummy, this position is half to the side and partially exposed. Dogs sleep on their side when they’re calm and confident (and maybe when their tummy is fuller than usual).
The Egg
When you see your dog sleeping with their limbs tucked in and their tail close by, you can assume they’re regulating their body temperature, protecting their vital organs, and reducing stress. Dogs typically sleep in this position during the colder months of the year.
Grandad after Xmas Dinner
This isn’t exactly a belly-up position… more like a belly-out position! If you’ve ever seen dogs sleeping sitting up on their bottoms, you know that it can strike a funny cord with many people. Dogs sleep this way to cool off because their exposed bellies don’t have as much hair as the rest of their bodies.
The Drama Queen
This sleeping position is aptly named. When your dog sleeps on their back with their limbs relaxed and their belly fully exposed, it usually means they feel too hot. It also means that they’re entirely comfortable around you, so take the win!
Breakdance
We may not understand how it’s comfortable, but sometimes dogs love to sleep in twisted-up ways. It means they’re very relaxed and they don’t mind exposing all of their vital organs to you. That’s one easygoing pup!
