Warm summer months mean it’s time to head outdoors with your dog, and if you and your furry friend are the outdoorsy type, it also means it’s time to pack a bag and go camping! Camping is a great way to immerse yourself in nature and embrace your wild side. Bringing your dog along can make the trip feel safer and should only add to the fun. Know Your Dog
One of the most important aspects of camping with your dog is knowing how they react around other people, unfamiliar territories, and in the outdoors. If your dog tends to lounge around indoors, make sure you bring plenty of comfortable blankets and toys for them to play with around the campfire or after a long day. This will make them feel more at home in the great outdoors. If your dog doesn’t do well around other people or in unfamiliar environments, try to go for picnics and hikes ahead of time to acclimate them to encountering new places and faces. They’ll be much more prepared for the big camping trip when the time comes!
Know Your Campsite
You should always research campsites ahead of time to make sure that they are dog-friendly. You would hate to pack up all of your belongings, get your dog into the car, and arrive at the campsite only to find that your dog isn’t able to join you. Some campsites may also have requirements on waste removal, leashing, shots/vaccinations, or other dog-related policies that you’ll want to know about going into your camping trip. Do thorough research ahead of time so you know what you’re getting into. Always better to be prepared!
What to Bring
When it comes to camping, it’s also very important for you to bring the proper supplies to keep your dog safe and happy. Nature can be unpredictable, so you should be sure to come extra prepared for any conditions. That means bringing rain boots, a pair of waterproof booties for your doggo, a tent that is waterproof, and extra warm gear for cold nights and mornings. You should also be sure to pack a dog first-aid kit. You never know when you might need to patch a wound or put an ice pack on a wound. Bring all of your dog’s registration and vaccine confirmation documents, and make sure all of their tags are legible and intact. Don’t forget other essentials, like dog food, water, and bowls for them to eat and drink from. You may consider bringing a dog pack for your doggo to sport on long hikes, but be sure to train them with the pack before buckling it on them.
