Some therapy dogs visit the sick in hospitals, or the elderly in homes. Others sit quietly and calmly by your side to provide you some security. But they all have something in common — they put a huge smile on anyone’s face.

We know any dog can brighten someone’s day, but therapy work requires more of a dog. Therapy dogs must be able to be calm, affectionate, and well-trained. Any dog breed could be considered, but these 7 breeds are some of the best for therapy work.

Golden Retriever

Golden’s are a favorite in a lot of families because of how well they get along with children and how friendly they are with strangers, which makes them a perfect candidate for therapy work.

Labrador Retriever

Labs are very similar to Golden Retrievers, in the sense that they love to give affection. Labs are very cuddly, which is an excellent quality for a therapy dog.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This is truly a do-it-all kind of dog. CKC’s are athletic, super smart, and gives awesome cuddles.

Grey Hound

Most people know Grey Hounds as racing dogs, but they have more to them than being fast. These dogs make great snuggle buddies, and can be couch potatoes if not told to move. They can socialize and soak up attention like a sponge!

Poodles are smart,  athletic, and super lovable. People assume that they are high-maintenance, but they’re actually really friendly. In addition, their fluffy coat doesn’t shed, making them an ideal choice for therapy dogs in hospitals.

Corgi

When properly trained and socialized, Corgis are outgoing, friendly dogs with big personalities that make them great for therapy work.

Beagles

Beagles are known to have sweet, happy personalities and are eager to please. As for therapy work, they a favorite to work with the elderly.
