Tips for Introducing Dogs to a Baby

As evidenced by the multitude of viral videos of dogs and babies being adorable together, dogs and babies often share a special bond and understanding of each other. However, introducing babies to dogs can be confusing and frightening for dogs at first, especially if they don’t have much previous experience with babies. Here’s how to navigate the changes that can come with bringing a new baby home to your furry friend.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Introducing your dog to a baby will likely be surprising to them either way, but if you prepare them ahead of time, they’ll find it much easier to accept the new family member into their space. First of all, you should try making gradual changes to your dog’s routines that you anticipate being the new normal when you bring the baby home. Bring out the crib and stroller ahead of time so your dog can adjust to their presence. Gradually decrease the amount of attention that you give your dog so that they can understand that they may not get as much attention when your newest family member arrives.

Give Your Dog Their Own Space

If you don’t already have a space in your home designated for your doggo, you should create a space for them to retreat to if they need some space. This should be far away from your baby’s crib, playpen, or anywhere else that you envision them spending lots of time. That way, your dog can get away whenever they’ve had enough baby time. Use commands and treats to guide your dog to their space, and place their favorite blankets and toys there so they feel like it’s their own. When you first bring the baby home, try to encourage your dog toward their space so they begin to understand that it’s their space to be separate from the baby.

Control their First Interaction with the Baby

When you first bring the baby home, greet your dog alone so they aren’t excitedly jumping over you and the baby. Allow your dog to sniff the baby, but keep them on a leash and give them lots of praise for gentle and mild behavior. Acclimating your dog to the baby’s scent and presence is one of the most important ways for them to adjust to the baby, especially sense dogs rely so keenly on their sense of smell to guide them. Once your dog can calmly sniff the baby, you can allow them to be around your little one off-leash. Slowly adjusting toward off-leash and free interactions will reinforce calm and gentle interactions with the baby.

Eventually, your dog will learn to accept your baby’s presence in the home, and they’ll love having a new best friend around. You’ll feel like one big, happy family in no time!
