2020 Hurricane Safety Tips for Dogs

Hurricane season ranges from June to November, with the most dangerous month being September each year. After several devastating storms, many residents of hurricane-impacted areas want to be prepared for their families and pets for the upcoming storms. Whether you choose to evacuate with your dog or stay home and ride out the storm, it’s important to have an emergency plan ready before a natural disaster occurs.

Track the Storm

Stay informed! Keeping an eye on the news and radars will allow you to stay up to date on the hurricanes path, strength, and the state’s current status.

Stick with your Emergency Plan

It’s easy to create a plan, but the key is to stick with it. Making a last-minute decision could put you and your furry companion in danger. Your plan should include how long you intend to stay in your home before evacuating. If you are ordered to evacuate, do it immediately!

Prepare Supplies

Before a storm, create a pet emergency kit that includes everything your pet will need to ride out the storm either in your home or in an evacuation shelter. Pack enough food and water to last your dog at least three days, along with a favorite toy.

Make sure you dog is always wearing a collar during a storm! If your dog gets loose during a storm, having some form of ID on him will make it easier for him to be returned to you.

Riding Out the Storm

If you choose to stay home during a hurricane, remember that your dog’s instincts may tell him to flee. Dogs can become anxious and react out of character when stressed. Most animals will often seek small areas to hide in.

Determine the safest room in your house that provides an emergency exit and has no windows. This should be the room you put your emergency supplies and where you can seek shelter with your dog. Set up puppy pads in the room in case the storm lasts longer then predicted.
