Organizing Your Home with Dogs

Organizing Your Home with Dogs

Dogs are like that one roommate in college who always made the biggest mess but never cleaned up after themselves…except unless your dog has super powers, they’ll never be able to clean up their own mess. Unfortunately, that’s where you come in! It’s hard work, but keeping your home organized while having a furry, four-legged roommate may not be as difficult as it sounds. Check out our tips for organizing your home with dogs!

Reevaluate What You Actually Need

It’s easy to get carried away when buying toys, supplies, and treats for your furry family member, but try to limit it to just the necessities. What do they actually use? Dog owners are notorious for hoarding surpluses of pet belongings, but try to toss whatever goes unused. Organization is much easier when you cut down to the basics. Plus, donation centers and shelters always appreciate your extra toys and supplies, so if your dog isn’t using it, some dog will!

Try Containers or Organizers

Simple plastic storage bins are an easy way to keep your dog’s belongings organized. We recommend labeling the boxes to keep toys separate from blankets, brushes, or other items that can collect fur. You can even disguise your storage bins as tasteful trunks† or a coffee table if you so please. Guests will never know! Some pet stores also make pet storage containers, which are designed specifically for pet supplies. Whether it be bins, hooks, or a secret compartment in a table, it’s important to have a spot where everything belongs. Otherwise, it’ll just end up on the floor!

Give Them Their Own Space

In many homes, space is limited. For others, dedicating an entire room of one’s home to their dog may seem excessive. However, giving your pet their own space for toys and supplies, whether it be a sectioned-off area of the living room, the mud room, the basement, or even the garage, is a great way to keep the remainder of your home tidy! Placing toys, food, dishes, leashes, and brushes in the same place will keep them out of the other spaces in your home. Plus, your pet will have a spot that they can consider their own territory, which can be very important in raising a healthy pup.

Don’t Forget About the Puppy Paperwork

When you think of pet organization, your first thought is probably the toys strewn about your living room, but it’s also extremely important that you keep your dog’s health, immunization, and veterinarian records in a safe place. Dedicate a folder or a desk drawer to important information for your dog and the rest of your family so you know where it is if you need to access it in an emergency.

When it comes to organization, these simple tips can really turn your house around. Stay clean and neat and you’ll feel so much better about you and your dog’s wellbeing!
