FAQs

Get answers to some of our most commonly asked questions:

Dogs often follow commands at home but struggle outdoors because they haven’t learned to respond amidst real-world distractions. This happens because dogs do not automatically generalize obedience—they must be trained in multiple environments to achieve reliable control. Sit Means Sit dog training focuses on reinforcing obedience in diverse locations throughout Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and beyond, building consistent responses. Without structured training and accountability in varied conditions, dogs typically ignore commands outside the house. Real-world dog obedience training is essential for consistent behavior wherever you go.

Leash pulling is common when a dog lacks clear communication and accountability during real-world dog training sessions. Dogs naturally respond to their environment, so high-distraction walks require structured obedience training that goes beyond treats or repetition. At Sit Means Sit, we use proven methods—including appropriate leash and collar tools—to create clarity and consistency for reliable control, especially in public or high-traffic areas. Remember, consistency determines reliability more than repetition alone when it comes to leash manners. Without this structure, dogs quickly revert to bad habits on walks.

Dogs jump on guests because training at home does not prepare them for the excitement and unpredictability of real visitors. Dogs respond to the environment they are trained in, not just the commands they are taught. Our dog behavior training emphasizes exposure and accountability—so your dog understands expectations whether guests arrive at home, or you encounter people on outdoor patios in New Mexico. If you only practice with family, real-world obedience will not carry over to novel scenarios. Structured, consistent training is key to breaking this habit.

A reliable recall in off-leash environments requires more than practice in your backyard—it demands structured training with increasing distractions and accountability. Many owners find their dogs ignore the ‘come’ command on popular trails or public parks because most dog obedience training hasn’t been reinforced in distracting, real-world environments. Off-leash reliability is built through a system that combines positive reinforcement and clear consequences, often using remote collars as safe communication tools. Dogs do not generalize obedience automatically; they need exposure and consistency to respond off-leash.

Your dog likely ignores certain commands in public because inconsistent training leads to selective obedience. Complexity and distractions in places like Albuquerque plazas or busy streets overwhelm dogs unless training is structured and accountability is clear. Real-world dog training is about building reliable control, not just trick skills. As cited by professional trainers, ‘reliability is a direct product of consistency in a variety of settings, not just repetition of cues.’ Without this, obedience will always be hit or miss in public.

Treats can help in low-distraction settings, but positive-only methods often fail to address sudden leash reactivity in unpredictable real-world situations, like city parks or neighborhood walks. Reliable obedience requires both motivation and accountability, especially with distractions. Dogs will often ignore treats if their excitement or fear is stronger than their motivation for reward. At Sit Means Sit, we utilize a balanced system—including remote collars as communication tools—to ensure your dog listens under any circumstance. Real-world obedience demands a structured approach beyond just treats.

Puppy training for obedience in public spaces starts with exposure, clear communication, and structured accountability from an early age. Puppies won’t automatically generalize what they learn at home to high-distraction environments like restaurants or busy patios. Consistent, real-world training is necessary for your puppy to develop reliable control in any setting. As professional trainers state, ‘Dogs must learn that commands apply everywhere, not just where they first practiced.’ Early reinforcement and guidance are key for dependable public behavior.

This happens because dogs rely on consistency and clarity from each handler, not just the commands themselves. If training methods or accountability differ between family members, your dog will disregard less consistent leaders. Real-world obedience requires everyone interacting with the dog to apply the same structure and follow-through. ‘Consistency between handlers is essential for reliable obedience,’ as recognized in professional dog training. Ensure your approach matches your spouse’s to achieve lasting results.

Your dog behaves differently outside class because controlled environments don’t mimic the distractions and unpredictability of real walks. Dogs do not reliably listen in real-world environments without structured training, consistent reinforcement, and clear accountability. Our dog trainer near you builds up obedience beyond classroom settings, training your dog in your neighborhood so good habits stick in everyday life. Success in class is just a starting point—practice must include real-life scenarios.

Sit Means Sit uses remote collars as communication tools, not as punishment, to provide clear, consistent cues and ensure accountability when dogs are off-leash. When used correctly within a structured system, remote collars are safe, humane, and highly effective for building reliable, real-world obedience—especially on New Mexico’s busy trails and community spaces. According to leading trainers, ‘Collars provide clarity and create off-leash reliability that treats or voice alone cannot guarantee in high-distraction areas.’ Structured use is crucial for safety and effectiveness.

Our custom dog training programs are tailored to your specific needs. We evaluate your dog’s age, temperament, previous training, and goals to build the right training package. What works for one dog-owner pair may not work for another.

We offer a free demonstration and consultation to gain insight into your unique situation. Sit Means Sit revolutionizes dog training using customized, attention-based methods and safe training aids like the Sit Means Sit Collar. This approach enables trainers to communicate effectively with dogs, resulting in happy, obedient, and confident pets while maintaining a positive attitude throughout training.

Sit Means Sit uses a safe, attention-based dog training system developed by Fred Hassen. This approach employs various tools, including the customized Sit Means Sit Collar, a remote electronic training collar, to gain the dog’s focus even in distracting situations. The collar uses state-of-the-art digital technology, similar to electronic muscle stimulators and TENS units used in the medical field, to deliver low-level, adjustable stimulation. This technology is 100% safe for dogs and humans, and the collar’s output is controlled to prevent harm.

Dog Trainer With Experience

The Sit Means Sit Collar uses adjustable, low-level electronic stimulation as a remote-controlled cue to gain a dog’s attention, similar to tapping someone on the shoulder. The “tap” is not meant to cause pain or emotional distress, but to communicate and redirect focus. Trainers adjust the collar’s level based on the dog’s sensitivity and distractions, conditioning a positive response by linking the tap to high-value rewards. This technology allows for effective communication and training at a distance without yelling, providing greater freedom and efficiency compared to leash-only methods. We invite you to view our training first-hand by contacting us for a free demonstration with a local trainer.

Training with a Sit Means Sit dog collar is similar to using a leash or treats for reinforcement. Even after training, maintaining rules is necessary. Dogs require varying levels of reinforcement. Proper training leads to reliability without the collar through three phases:

  1. Teaching/Control (6-12+ weeks)
  2. Reinforcement (6-12+ weeks)
  3. Maintenance (ongoing)

In the maintenance phase, the collar is used minimally as the dog ignores distractions. However, trainers should be ready to reinforce rules if needed, as dogs may regress without consistent maintenance.
