How to Puppy Proof Your Furniture

Most pet owners have a tendency to treat their four-legged friends just like any other family member but when it comes to your beloved living room sofa the rules may change. The “no pets on the furniture” rule is popular in most households because of the likely wear and tear. It becomes more problematic when you have a dog that is attracted to the texture of your furniture. As we all know, dogs have a curious nature and an instinct to dig. If you aren’t careful your personal items could be their next victim. They will either rip it to pieces because they enjoy the feeling or because they don’t and want to remove it. We’ve come up with a few tips below to help you puppy proof your furniture!

  • Cover the furniture with washable blankets or slipcovers. This is a good idea for dogs that already have an established place on the couch next to you. It’s a simple way to keep your furniture puppy free and keep them content.
  • Provide them with their very own pillow and blanket when you are sitting on the couch. This way you aren’t leaving them out and they still have a special, comfy spot to lie down.
  • Some dogs have a major problem with chewing on wood. Don’t come home to destroyed chair legs and beat up entryways. Click on the links provided to purchase products that will repel your dog from chewing on the wood. You can even make your own repellent by mixing vinegar and water!
  • Your pup may be ruining the furniture out of pure boredom. Before you leave the house make sure your dog has plenty of toys to play with. Also, be sure to entertain them and give them their daily dose of exercise. Dogs who have a lot of energy built up tend to get into more trouble.
  • If you ever catch your dog tearing up the furniture, reply with a serious “no” command. Obviously this will take a few times but at least it will remind them who is in control and that you aren’t happy with their actions.
