Inexpensive Ways to Keep Your Dog Stimulated

Inexpensive Ways to Keep Your Dog Stimulated

Do you come home to find accidents in the house? What about destroyed furniture or household items? Dogs need both mental and physical stimulation to keep themselves health, happy, and out of trouble. Spending time with your dog increases your bond together as well. There are lots of way to keep your dog engaged that doesn’t cost much.

Interactive Games

The most classic game to play with dogs is the all-time favorite of fetch. Some dogs prefer Frisbees or balls, while others would rather chase their favorite toy down. If your dog starts to get bored with fetch, try an oddly shaped toy that might bounce erratically.

Tug-of-war is another classic game. Some ropes have a comfortable handle for you to grip. Old t-shirts, towels, or other soft materials can also be used to make low-cost tug-toys.

Distraction Toys

If you don’t have the time to be playing games with your dog everyday, there are plenty of options to keep your pup engaged.

Kong toys are great for stimulating your dog. These can be stuffed with treats, peanut butter, or frozen surprise. You can even feed your dog his food out of these toys, especially if your dog is a speed eater.

Frozen treats are a cheap alternative to purchasing a Kong. You can freeze treats inside an ice cube, or alternatively freeze broth to keep your dog engaged.

If your dog is a digger, consider making a designated spot for your dog to dig. Here you can bury toys for your dog to dig up and find.

Snuffle mats can be made at home where treats are hidden. This can keep your dog engaged for awhile as they get all of the treats out!

Change Things Up

Consider changing your walk. If you generally walk the same route, try a different one or visit a park you don’t generally visit. Also, slow down and let your dog sniff around. There is more than just sights to see when it comes to walking with your dog. Stopping to sniff around can give them even more information. Sometimes a slow walk can be more stimulating than a fast-paced one.

Sometimes we teach our dogs the basics and then tend to forget that they can learn much more. There are lots of options. Looking for something to show off when you’re out and about? Teach him to play dead! Want help around the house? Teach him to clean up his toys or carry grocery bags in (only if you trust him not to steal any snacks).

A play date can go a long way in keeping your dog both mentally and physically stimulated. It’s best if this is a dog you have met before and is about the same size and energy level as your dog.

Before leaving your dog alone with any toys, be sure to monitor his behavior to see if he destroys them so as to avoid any eating of things he shouldn’t be. When bringing a new dog around, make sure they are introduced in a neutral setting in a positive controlled environment. With a little effort, you can easily keep your dog healthy and happy by engaging him in various ways on a daily basis.
