Tips for Saving Money on Pet Expenses

We all love our dogs, they’re our best friends, but sometimes they can put unexpected dents in our pockets.

Being able to afford the maintenance of dogs is a top reason they are typically relinquished. But if you plan and prepare, there are ways to keep bills low and manageable.

1. Be Proactive

Don’t cut corners with preventive medicine and vaccines. Those few extra dollars round up and save a lot more than if your dog ended up with said disease. For example, if your dog got heartworm disease, the treatment and hospitalization could leave you with a four-figure vet bill. Medicines and vaccines can save your dogs life and your pockets.

2. Purchase from Reputable Breeders

Free puppies may sound nice, but you never know their background which could cost you a lot in the long run. Reputable breeders charge more, but you know what you’re paying for in terms of health.

3. Brush your Dog’s Teeth

Although this may seem silly, it’s not. If your dog is over the age of three and you haven’t been brushing their teeth, they likely have periodontal disease. Treatment for this can cost a lot of money, save yourself by brushing their teeth.

4. Brush your Dog’s Hair

Groomers charge a lot for removing knots and mats. To keep the bill low, run a brush through your dog’s hair at least once a week. Area’s around their cheeks and ears tend to be more prone to matting.

5. Dedicated Credit Card or Savings

Having a credit card or savings account reserved for your pet emergencies can be great. These especially work for late night pet visits to the ER. Having that extra security will allow you to focus on your pup.

With these tips you are sure to save money on your pet.
