Why it’s Important to Keep Your Dog’s “Bangs” Trimmed

Hairstyles go in and out of season, especially bangs. But what about bangs on our furry friends? Many dog breeds have fur that covers their face or hangs around their eyes, giving them the appearance of having bangs. But why is it important to make sure your dog’s “bangs” stay trimmed? Read on to find out exactly what’s all the fuss about fur grooming around the face.

Being Able to See

Just like humans, dogs cannot see through thick bangs or fur that is obscuring their faces. Trimmed bangs make a pooch’s life much easier to navigate. Clumsy dog? Maybe try trimming the fur around their eyes!

Dogs rely a lot on their senses to be able to communicate with others. So taking away one of those senses makes their life a lot more difficult to manage. If your dog has long, untrimmed, bangs, they may even get anxious or fearful of their surroundings if they feel like they can’t adequately visualize what’s going on around them.

Untrimmed fur or bangs can cause issues with sight, but also just leave your dog feeling overall uncomfortable. Hairs may stick to their eyes and cause irritation or scratching if you’re not careful. Plus, unclean fur may lead to an infection if your pup gets some unwanted hair falling into their eyes. Some breeds that most often face issues with “bangs” are Poodles, Bearded Collies, Skye Terrier, and English Sheep Dogs.

Trimming Bangs

Trimming your dog’s bangs in between grooming sessions, or as their grooming maintenance, is easy! You can take them to a professional groomer if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself yet or try a small section of fur first to see how you and your pup feel about you doing the trimming.

If you’re going the DIY route, be sure to use quality grooming tools, like fur sheers. Make sure the environment, you, and your dog are calm before beginning. Start small and be sure to brush away any fur so that it doesn’t fall into your dog’s eyes! If this is too much for you to handle, try putting up the hair in a comfortable top knot. You can leave it like this as a quick fix or even trim the hairs while they’re tied up!

While your dog’s shag may be adorable and give them a unique personality quirk, their bangs are likely bothering them and preventing them from seeing everything they should. Remember to keep your pooch’s bangs trimmed to a manageable length so that they can see the world around, feel comfortable, and don’t have any irritation! Plus, you can leave the bangs to a length you think is cute, just make sure they can see and the hairs aren’t at risk of touching their eyes.
