Tips for Having a Safe Thanksgiving with Fido

Tips for Having a Safe Thanksgiving with Fido

We can’t imagine leaving Fido out of the Thanksgiving festivities. However, the safety of our companions is still our number one priority! So, read below for tips on how to have a safe Thanksgiving with Fido.

Guests

Having more guests in your home than normal means more activity and noise. Some dogs love visitors, and others can be nervous around them. So, know your dog and have a plan to keep your guests and your furry friend happy and comfortable. If your pal loves to greet guests and get lots of new attention, be sure that they will respect personal space. This means ensuring your pal won’t jump into your guest’s lap while eating or constantly giving unwanted licks. If you think your pal will be too wound up, try to keep them in another room or out of the dining room.

Additionally, if your pup is more anxious, keep them in a safe, quiet space with their favorite toys. Moreover, keep your guest’s belongings out of reach if you have a curious dog. You don’t want Fido destroying items or finding something hazardous without supervision.

Decorations

The holidays are all about feeling festive, so that doesn’t stop at decor! But remember what is safe for your furry friend to be around and what should be displayed with caution. For example, if ingested, seasonal plants such as poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe are toxic to your canine. Additionally, pine needles and pinecones can cause harm to your pup’s digestive system. Lastly, candles and string lights can burn or shock your curious four-legged friend. However, this doesn’t mean you must hold back on the decorating. Our furry friends are excited by new things and love exploring them. So, keep hazards out of reach to keep your canine companion safe this season.

Food

Thanksgiving may be all about the food for us, but it can harm your pup. We know it’s hard to say no to those puppy dog eyes, but stay strong! You should NEVER feed your companion:

  • turkey bones
  • turkey skin
  • gravy
  • stuffing
  • creamed peans
  • onions
  • garlic
  • grapes
  • raisins
  • yeast dough
  • chocolate
  • alcohol

Also, please keep your furry friends safe and out of the kitchen so they are away from hot ovens and stovetops. Plus, keep the trashcan lid on tight and take out the trash after cooking and eating. This will ensure your four-legged friend doesn’t find himself a snack!

Traveling

If you travel for a holiday instead of having guests over, ensure you are prepared for a road trip or a flight! First, make sure you secure your companion safely in the car. Don’t let your pal roam around the vehicle or ride in your lap. Additionally, remember to pack food, treats, water, poop bags, toys, and bedding. You should also bring any medications your pal takes and a first-aid kit. Remember, it’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared.

Have fun and make lasting memories with your friends, family, and furry friends this holiday season. Follow the tips above to have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
