Is Turkey Safe for Dogs?

Yes, turkey is safe for canines; it’s even in some of the kibble and wet food you feed them! Regular thanksgiving turkey is a bit different, though. Since you’re making the turkey specifically for humans, you’re not considering some of the dangers your Thanksgiving turkey can pose compared to turkey that’s prepared specifically made for dogs. Although turkey is technically safe for our canines, not every part of it is.

Does it Matter What Part of the Turkey?

You should never give Fido any of the skin, stuffing, or gravy that comes with Thanksgiving turkey. These usually have extra spices and seasoning that your pooch won’t react well to. Rich and sodium-filled ingredients like butter can end up causing your furry friend digestive ailments. Additionally, onions and garlic are specifically toxic to our canine companions, so they should be avoided at all costs.

Another part of the turkey that you should never give to your pup is the bones. Cooked bones are extremely brittle and can up breaking off and splintering in your pooch’s mouth.

If you do end up giving your canine a piece of some turkey meat, make sure you do so in moderation. It’s alright to let your furry friend in on your Thanksgiving feast, as long as you don’t overdo it.
