What to Do if Your Dog is Sprayed by a Skunk
Dogs are curious creatures so when they see a skunk running across the yard, their curiosity is gonna take over. This could result in fewer skunks in your yard, or this could result in a very stinky dog.
Here are the best ways to get rid of that awful odor.
1. Keep Fido Outside
Unless you want your whole house to smell like skunk, keep your dog outside so they don’t stink up the house. While they are out there, check their eyes to see if they are red or irritated. If they are, flush them out with cool water.
2. Start Mixing
Unless you want to go to the grocery store and get every can of tomato juice off of the shelves, mix together these household ingredients:
- 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap
If you don’t have these ingredients, you can also try using white vinegar diluted with water.
3. Wash
Put on some rubber gloves and start working this solution into your dog’s fur. Avoid their eyes because it could irritate them. Once you have worked this solution all over their body, rinse thoroughly. Leaving this mixture on for too long can bleach your pup’s fur.
4. Shampoo
Once your dog is thoroughly rinsed, wash your dog with pet shampoo and rinse well. At this point, they should be back to smelling good and you can towel dry your pup. Let them hang out in the sun for a while so they don’t get too chilly.
Hopefully, now your pup is thoroughly de-stinked and your dog has learned its lesson! Better luck next time Fido!
