HAVE YOU HEARD???

Many clients are concerned about the “mystery dog virus” being seen in many states. This virus has been circulating for over a year now. Unfortunately, the cause and ideal treatment have yet to be discovered. The symptoms present with a “cough” that does not resolve with antibiotics. Your dog feels “yucky” and it can progress quickly to a productive cough and then pneumonia. In exceptional cases, it can be fatal.

We do not take this virus lightly, nor any illness that can affect your pet. We continue, as always, to sanitize dog kennels/crates/floors/water & food bowls with very effective pet safe disinfectants used by veterinarians and pet facilities. We will refrain from common water bowls  and toys in our training room. Any dog in our care that presents with symptoms will be isolated from other dogs (we have a separate room with separate ventilation system) and sent home immediately.

Our own dogs are here at the facility every day with us and have not experienced this illness over the last year, or frankly last 7 years here, including the common “kennel cough”. All owners are responsible for the health and veterinary care of their dogs. Please know that if your dog is with us and we have concern, we will always act in the best interest of your beloved family member. In many ways, and my personal opinion, to a degree the way we managed the pandemic is similar to how we need to manage this canine virus.

What can you do:

  • Monitor your dog very closely for any symptoms
    • Coughing
    • Sneezing
    • Nasal discharge
    • Rapid/Labored breathing
    • Lethargy
    • Loss of appetite
    • Eye/Nasal discharge perhaps accompanied by cough
  • Ensure your dog us up to date on all vaccines, including Canine Influenza
  • Limit contact when possible, stay home if you suspect illness
  • If any signs or symptoms appear, isolate your dog visit a vet right away until cleared
  • Be diligent in your daily sanitization and routines, like snout to tail assessments
  • Please notify us immediately if your dog becomes sick and has been to our facility so we may “contact trace” and notify any other owners to watch their dogs closely

What we are being advised of by the Colorado Department of Agriculture:

  • Ensure dogs entering the facility are healthy and do not present with symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, eye/nasal discharge or lethargy
  • Consult with our partnered veterinarians on best practices and up to date information
  • Monitor dogs for symptoms or respiratory illness (listed above to include fever)
  • Have a plan in place to isolate or remove sick dogs from the facility
