Protecting Your Pup’s Paws from the Hot Pavement

We love taking our furry friends on walks to enjoy the beautiful warm summer weather with them. But, we can’t forget about the hot pavement being a risk for causing burns on your pup’s paws! So, a good rule of thumb is that if you can’t leave your hands comfortably on the pavement for at least 10 seconds, it is too hot for your dog! Below are some tips to keep your pup from getting burned.

1. Walk When It’s Cool

Plan your daily walks around the time of day. Clearly, it is best to take walks in the morning or late evening when the pavement is cool. If you take walks in the afternoon, the sun is too high and hot and will result in scorching pavement temperatures. And, taking walks at cooler times will be more comfortable for you too!

2. Toughen Those Paws

Even when walking on cool pavement, it will help to toughen up your pal’s paws. Similar to how your hands or feet build calluses, taking walks on the pavement will help toughen your pooch’s paws and help prevent future injury or burns.

3. Grass Walks

If you do need to take your four-legged friend on a walk during the hotter times of the day, you should stick to walking on the grass or shady areas. So, be sure to stay away from sidewalks and pavement to avoid burns. Fido will love a nice afternoon at the park with you on a warm day!

4. Paw Wax

Paw wax is designed to protect your pal’s paws from hot surfaces as well as potentially harmful chemicals, such as road salts. You can easily spread the was onto your four-legged friend’s feet to protect them. Additionally, you can also use vaseline, though it does not work as well, it is great if you need something right away.

5. Dog Shoes or Pads

If your companion can tolerate wearing them, dog shoes are amazing! Undoubtedly, they offer the most protection to your pup’s paws. If shoes are an option for your pal, be sure to buy shoes that have rubber soles because they offer the best protection. However, not all dogs will like shoes and it can be an adjustment for your pooch to get used to. If you can get your pal to enjoy them, you should invest in some nice shoes!

Additionally, thin and flexible peel and stick pads are another way to protect your pup’s feet that may be less awkward for them. They help to protect against pavement burns and other injuries. Also, they can also help your pal get traction on slick surfaces. Even better, they can be reused multiple times!

Check Their Paws Carefully

You should check your pup’s paws daily for any signs of injury. Also, you should wash your furry friend’s feet frequently to clean off any debris that could cause injury. Here is a great paw cleaning tool! If you do see a problem, take your companion to the vet for a professional exam and treatment options.

Symptoms of Burned Paws

Though you may check your pup’s paws daily, not all injuries may be visible to you. Symptoms of burnt paws include:

  • limping
  • avoiding walking
  • licking or chewing at the feet
  • paw pads are darker in color
  • pads are visibly injured
  • blisters or redness on pads

How to Treat Burnt Paws

So, if you suspect your pup has burned paws you should:

  • bring your dog inside (carry them if they need)
  • rinse the injured pads with cold water
  • use a cold compress
  • try to keep your dog from licking the injury
  • take your pal to the vet as soon as you can
