Keeping Your Dog Safe During Mardi Gras

Want to bring Fido to the Mardi Gras festivities? Read below for tips on keeping your dog safe during Mardi Gras.

Stress Test

First off, know if your pal will be comfortable outside of the house, around more strangers, more noises, and more sounds. If you don’t think your pal can handle the day out, or you have doubts, it is best to leave Fido at home. This is a safe option for everyone, not just your furry friend.

Hydration

Be sure to bring a water bottle and a collapsible bowl to keep you and your pal hydrated! Along with drinking plenty of water, take bathroom breaks as needed. It is also important to take these potty breaks away from the crowds. This way your pal will have a break from the excitement and they won’t accidentally go in the street. This can cause you fines and community service. So, remember to take frequent potty breaks!

Food

Mari Gras food is great for us to enjoy, but be careful what you give Fido! For example, King Cake contains plastic dolls that could cause choking or intestinal blockage. Also, the high sugar content is not good for your pal either. Other savory food can be dangerous too. Especially onions and extra seasonings can be toxic to dogs. So, bring some dog treats from home if you think your companion will get hungry!

Hazards

The party can get pretty rowdy. Dense and excited crowds can cause injury to your pal. So, try to avoid tightly packed crowds when you can. This is especially important if you have a small breed. You may want to consider bringing a dog stroller to prevent your four-legged friend from being stepped on amidst all the fun.

Additionally, beads and necklaces pose a hazard to your pal. Never put beads around your companion’s neck or let them play with them. This can cause choking or strangulation. Instead, opt for a festive bandana.

Also, stay alert at all times. Keep an eye out for dangers such as food, people, or flying beads.

Body Language

Lastly, know your dog’s body language. watch for signs that your pal is uncomfortable or even ready to leave. This includes tail tucking, hiding, cowering, or vocalizing. Keep your companion feeling safe and remove them from the situation as soon as you can.

Mardi Gras can be fun for everyone! Follow the tips above to ensure you and your pal have a fun and safe celebration!
