Protecting Your Dog’s Eyes

We do a lot to take care of ourselves. From eating right to exercising, we take a lot of steps every day to live healthier lives. And of course we do the same for our dogs. But one thing we often forget about for our dogs is protecting their skin and eyes. Just like us, our dogs need protection from the sun and damaging UV rays. We also need to think about their eyes. Dogs are at risk for impairments or issues. Luckily, there are many things we can do to help your dog stay safe and healthy.

Doggie Goggles

Certain dogs are more at risk for eye issues. Some breads, specifically German Shepherds, Greyhounds, Labs and Border Collies, are at a higher risk for eye damage. Another reason your dog could be at higher risk for damage is spending a lot of time outdoors, specifically in the mountains, snow, or the beach where there is a lot of sand. If your dog works doing military or police work or spends a lot of time in tall grass, thorns, etc., your dog could be needing additionally protection. One of the best ways to protect their eyes are with dog goggles. Rex Specs or a similar brand are a great option. Not only do these provide protection from 99-100% of UVA/UVB rays, but they also generally keep out any debris, bugs, wind, etc. They are the perfect protection for adventurous dogs that spend time in high altitudes, the mountains, the beach, or sand dunes.

Helping Your Dog Wear The Goggles

Just like putting anything new on your dog’s body makes them uncomfortable, they will feel strange wearing goggles when they begin. They will paw at their face and try to pull them off. It will take some getting used to. The first step is to make sure the goggles fit properly and are comfortable on your pup, which means getting the elastic strap the perfect tightness. Your dog should be able to have full range of motion in their head and mouth.

You should also take the time to help your dog adjust to wearing the goggles. Take out the lenses when your dog first tries them on. This will help them get used to the feeling of the goggles to begin, then you can add the lenses later. You should also be sure to introduce your dog to the goggles in a familiar place. Try them on at home when your dog is doing something they know and enjoy like eating or sleeping. Lastly, make it fun and exciting by using positive association. Put the goggles on before doing something they feel happy doing, like eating dinner, enjoying playtime, etc. You can put the goggles on then give a treat! It will teach them over time that wearing the goggles is a positive and fun time.

Keeping Your Dog Healthy in Other Ways

Beyond just protecting your dog’s eyes when out in the snow, on the beach, or in the mountains, you also need to keep them hydrated. Be sure to always bring plenty of water for your pup when out on these adventures. One way to do this is to make sure you have the proper containers for water. Get a doggie water bottle with a spout or a portable bowl that is easy to drink out of when on the go. Your dog will appreciate it.

Hopefully you feel more confident in knowing how to protect your dog’s skin and eyes. Remember to prioritize this and keep your dog safe, so they can live a long and happy life.
