Things to Pack When You Travel with Dogs

Your canine can be a great companion, so it’s no surprise that many pet parents enjoy taking their pooch on vacation with them. But before you head out, make sure you’ve got everything you need so your trip is smooth sailing.

Going on a Road Trip?

First, consider your furry friends comfort level. If Fido gets carsick easily or finds it hard to get in and out of the vehicle – you may want to rethink packing your pup in the car for a long road trip. If your dog is alright traveling in cars, you’ll want to make it a habit to always have them safely confined, ensuring not only your pup’s safety but everyone else’s in the car. A crate or a harness are both great options – but also keep in mind you’ll want to take appropriately spaced out spots (about every 2 to 3 hours), so your pup can stretch out every once in a while. And as always, NEVER leave your dog alone in the car.

• A current photo of Fido in case you become separated

Planning a Camping Adventure?

You’ll want to triple check before you head out to the vast wilderness that it is a pet-friendly campground. The last thing you want is a park ranger asking you to remove your dog from the premise right after you set up and perfected your tent.

Camping Trip Checklist

• Proof of current vaccinations
• Backup leash and collar
• Soap and water to clean up any wounds your dog may acquire
• Brush or comb to get out any “hitchhikers” or look for ticks
• Towel to wipe your canine down because there is no doubt about it – they will get dirty
• Tweezers to remove potential ticks
• Life jacket in case you decide to go swimming

Looking at Flights?

Policies on pet travel vary widely depending on the airline – so always double-check what your flight’s rules and regulations. Also, check the airport’s website for their policies when it comes to taking your canine to terminals. They may also provide “pet relief” areas where your furry friend can go potty and stretch out.

If you’re flying internationally, it’s also crucial that you check what that country’s requirements are for admitting animals.
