Winter Myths Part 1

Keeping your dog healthy and happy all winter long can be a challenge, especially if you get a lot of snow. However, you can make it easier on the both of you by reading through the myths about dogs in winter that we are going to share in the following three blogs!

MYTH: Dogs don’t need boots, because their paws are made to not freeze

  • Truth: Dogs do have a special circulatory system in their paws. It prevents them from losing heat as quickly as we do. However, temperature isn’t always the main concern. Ice can be jagged and rough, and it collects between the toes of dogs with long fur. Both can be very painful. Additionally, sidewalks become toxic in winter because of de-icers. Having your dog wear booties can be very preferable to rinsing off his or her paws after every walk.

MYTH: Small dogs can’t participate in winter sports

  • Truth: You don’t have to have a Husky in order to play in the snow with your dog. Even small dogs enjoy running in the snow and exploring. Just make sure you keep an eye out for when the snow is so deep they disappear! One great option is to cross-country ski with your dog leading on a leash. Even little dogs can enjoy this.
