Does Your Dog Understand Facetime?

For those who have to be away from their favorite people, Facetime can really help bridge the gap. When people move, go to college, go on a trip, or maybe even if you haven’t seen a person in a while, being able to talk face-to-face with someone on the phone is a great way to connect.

And if we have to be away from our furry friends, we want to see their cute little faces on our phones! But, when we talk to our dogs on Facetime, do they know it’s us? Do they know we are there?

Here’s what we know about dogs on Facetime.

Do Dogs Get It?

Unfortunately for us, our dogs definitely do not understand Facetime or even just a simple phone call. Why?

Dogs navigate the world through their noses. They are constantly sniffing around in order to make sense of the world around them. And while they do rely heavily on their eyes and ears to take in the world, their noses are doing most of the work. This means that during a phone call or a Facetime, your pup might perk up a little if they hear your voice, but without your scent to go along with it, they will lose interest pretty quickly.

Also, the way dogs perceive what happens on a screen is different than the way we humans see it. So while we see a fluid video coming through our phones, dogs are only seeing snapshots of a video. This is probably not the most fun thing to look at and they would much rather move on to something else.

Can I Still Call My Dog?

While we know that dogs don’t really care much for Facetime or phone calls, we also know that you miss your little furball when you’re away, so keep calling! They may not care too much but if it makes you feel better then go for it! Your dog will just be happy to see you when you get home!
