New Year’s Resolutions for Dog Owners

Every year as we celebrate the beginning of a New Year, we often make resolutions. We think of the things we want to do more of, things we are going to stop doing, or other ways we want to make a change. But sometimes it can be hard to think of the specific things we want to do.

If you are a dog owner, we have a few suggestions for New Year’s resolutions for you!

Get Microchipped

Getting your pup microchipped is the best way to ensure that if your pooch gets lost, you will be reunited. This technology is very reliable as it cannot fall off or get lost like a collar tag.

A microchip is an easy, cost-effective procedure that will allow you peace of mind that you and your pet will find your way back to each other should you ever be separated.

Eat Healthier

While humans often make this resolution for themselves, the New Year can offer a good reminder to check in on what and how much your dog is eating.

If you notice your dog has fluctuated in weight in the last year, you may need to adjust how much food you’re giving your dog or reduce/increase the number of treats you give them every day.

And, if you’re looking for ways to incorporate a more balanced diet in your dog’s life, here is a list of dog-safe fruits and vegetables you can use to increase the variety in their meals.

Get Active

If you are looking for a resolution that is good for you and your dog, getting more active is a great option! This could include going on longer or more frequent walks, spending more time at the park, playing more games of fetch, or thinking of out-of-the-box ways to keep from sitting around.

Take Fido window shopping with you, get out and explore the dog-friendly businesses in your city, or check out some different hiking trails near you! There are tons of ways to keep you and your pup moving this year.

Learn New Tricks

The new year can provide a great opportunity to learn some new skills for you or your dog! Maybe you want to learn to cook or how to sew, and maybe you want to teach Fido how to roll over or complete an agility course.

Dogs are very smart animals and are capable of much more than learning to sit or stay if you spend time teaching them!

Train for a Race

If you have always thought about running a 5K or maybe even a marathon, then 2023 is your year! Dogs make great training buddies! They get excited about every run and keep you accountable.

While running a full marathon may be too long of a run for most dogs, after training and building up some strength, many dogs may be able to go on longer runs with you, which is good for both of you.

Spend Time Together

If this is your New Year’s resolution, then you have a very lucky dog! Your pup would love nothing more than to spend all day hanging out with their favorite person.

Going on walks, going to the park, playing fetch, or even watching TV are all things that your pooch would love to spend more time doing with you.

No matter what your New Year’s resolution is this year, remember to try and include your pup as much as possible. It will make 2023 their best year yet!
