How To Catch A Loose Dog

Sometimes you can’t control your dog and they may slip loose from their leash while out on a walk. While you’re going crazy trying to catch them, they may think it’s a game that you guys are playing and become joyful.

Although you’re genuinely concerned chasing your dog around, there are a few tips and tricks that may lessen your worry and the time it takes trying to catch your dog.

Note: If your dog has run into oncoming traffic or across the street, make sure to safely cross the street. You want to be on the same side of the road, but don’t go near your dog while panicking or running after them.

Bribery

While you’re standing and calling your dogs name, if you have any treats or snacks hold them out. What dog doesn’t get excited by treats! If you don’t have any of those, try rustling a receipt or anything that may give your pup the impression of treats.

Skipping Around

Try bouncing and skipping around. These movements will imitate a playful dog and may encourage your dog to chase you.

Squatting Low

If you squat low to the ground, you may seem more interesting to your dog. Getting low puts you on their level, and makes them less scared to approach you.

When you’re home, you can try to practice some recall commands to prevent future troubles. Make sure to practice in a safe area, and giving your dog a big treat when they come back will positively reinforce this behavior.

In the end, when you and your dog are safe and together, resist the urge to show them how upset you are. Make sure they know returning is good.
