How to Properly Store Your Dog’s Food

Dry Food 

Keep food in an airtight container. 

Make sure the dry food is always adequately sealed to prevent spoilage of the dry food. You should also move the dry food into a separate container. Dog food bags are not durable and can have slight scratches on the bag’s surface. These scratches harbor bacteria, which can make your furry friend sick. Instead, store your food in a sealed container inside the original bag.’

Keep your food container clean. 

While it might be tempting to top off your original bag with new food, that can cause significant spoilage. Oils from the old kibble batch can make the continuator rancid and spread bacteria that can make Fido sick. So, once the container is empty, clean it out before refilling it with a new bag. 

Store in a cool and dry place. 

Ensure your dog food is stored in a cool, dry place to prevent mold. Mold often grows in warm areas and can make your dog sick. So, make sure to throw out any kibble that grows mold. As warm temperatures can also make the dog food go bad quicker, keep the food stored in a cold place. 

Wet Food

Survey your cans. 

While canned food can last a long time, check up on the condition of your cans occasionally. Look out for deep dents, swelling, or air bubbles. These are signs that they can have dangerous bacteria growing inside. If a can has any of these signs, throw it out immediately, as this bacteria will cause sickness in your pooch. 

Reseal the cans. 

While canned food can last long, resealing unfinished cans is essential. Make sure to reseal the cans with a can cover. The silicon covers keep your dog food fresh and hygienic. After resealing, also store the cans in the refrigerator, as the cold temperature will keep the dog food fresh. Unsealed cans can cause massive spoilage and bacteria growth in the food.
