“What kind of food do you feed your dogs?”

I am frequently asked the kind of food I personally feed my dogs. There are MANY high quality foods on the market found in big box and smaller specialty pet stores in our area.

My favorite internet site with a wealth of info about food is:

DogFoodAdvisor.com

If you have never gone to this site, I encourage you to take some time to review the food that you presently buy.

Time to pick up food? Locally, I try to support some of our smaller suppliers, such as Four Paws (Longmont), Muttz (Firestone) and Chuck & Don’s (Longmont).

I think the number-one factor in the food that you feed your dog is: They have to like it!

I also encourage you to get your dog on a regular feeding SCHEDULE, once you find the food that they like. If you feed your dogs on a regular schedule, they also eliminate on a regular schedule.

Free-feeding sounds like a good plan if you have a busy schedule (nobody is at home to let the dog out) BUT, it’s a better idea to KNOW when your dog needs to get out for a potty break. Free feeding usually leads to dogs that may be overweight or not very motivated to eat their food when you put it out. They have the mindset of “I can get it later…” What happens when they nibble a little at a time, all day, then finally feel the urge to go outside? Housebreaking issues!

Free-feeding also makes it harder to become aware of health issues by eliminating your ability to monitor appetite,

Many drawbacks outweigh the apparent convenience of free-feeding. For more info: Convenience of free feeding dogs comes with many disadvantages.

So, the answer to “what do you feed your dogs?” Personally, Petey, Penny, Phlash and Neo eat Acana Duck and Pear. All of my dogs get a medallion of RAW meat added to their food at breakfast & dinner with a little water. In the morning, all of them get a spoonful of plain yogurt (with probiotics) to help keep their digestive tracts in check. I have used many foods over the years, but I am very happy with this routine.
