Relieving Your Dog's Seasonal Allergies

Relieving Your Dog’s Seasonal Allergies

As the seasons change, allergies have a field day with humans and dogs alike. Allergies for your furry friend can be a real pain. From runny noses, sneezing, or coughing, doggie allergies can get fairly serious. Dog’s seasonal allergies can be similar to those that humans experience, which means you’ll also need to take measures to relieve your pup’s symptoms! Here are a few tips to ease your furball’s seasonal sniffles.

Change Up Your Walking Routine

Dogs run on a routine so changing it up is not ideal, but if your dog’s allergies are affected by pollen, in particular, adapting to their allergies is necessary. Walking your dog during peak pollen hours, like early morning and afternoon, will heighten their symptoms. Try only walking them during non-peak times and avoid areas with allergen plants!

After coming home from your walk, be sure to clean up your pup’s paws, mouth, and nose with a hypoallergenic cloth or wipe. Removing excess allergens on your pooch’s skin will prevent unnecessary allergic reactions and ease symptoms.

Clean Up The Air

Make sure to regularly change your home’s air filters to cut down on allergens that are present. Open doors and windows can also be an issue if you live near allergen plants. The use of an air humidifier or air purifier can help to remove mold growing in damp areas of your home. Filtrating the air can be key to removing allergens in the home!

Be Careful Where You Sleep

You and your dog can both come in contact with different allergens throughout the day, especially going outside. This means you should protect the places your dog sleeps by cleaning them regularly, putting towels/blankets down, and making sure they don’t come into contact with your ‘outside clothes’ if you did leave the house. Allergens can stick to fabrics, especially beds and beddings, so clean up with a pet-friendly detergent when necessary!

Bath Time

Preventing itchy and dry skin caused by allergies can be done by bathing regularly and with a sensitive dog wash! Washing your pooch’s fur with relieving ingredients such as aloe or oatmeal can help ease itching pains. Your dog may also benefit from oils after bath time, like coconut oil.

Consider Supplements

Supplements can be a great addition to your furball’s allergy relief. Supplements like fish oil, omega-3, or omega-6 will help to relieve issues with your dog’s skin during allergic reactions. Consult your veterinarian to be sure that your dog will benefit from the use of dietary supplements.

Depending on how severe your canine’s allergies are, you may want to seek further medical treatment, like steroids, from the vet! But, if your pup’s allergies are on the more mild side, using some of these tips should help to relieve their pain.
