Dog Breeds with Long Ears

Dog Breeds with Long Ears

Long-eared dogs are often quite adorable, but there is a reason for those dangly ears. It is thought that long ears are used to send scents quicker to the nose which is why dogs with long ears are often tracking and hunting dogs. Although this may be the cause, those ears are a distinctive trait for many breeds that do not need to be used to track scents. Here are some of the most common long-eared pups if you are interested in learning more.

Bloodhound

A breed that is often thought about when picturing long-eared dogs is bloodhounds. These dogs have been around for a long time and have those defining ears as they were used to track humans long ago. Bloodhounds often have a dense coat, many face folds, and weigh around 90 pounds. Debris, bacteria, and other things can get trapped in their thick ears and folds. They are prone to ear infections, so if you have a bloodhound, make sure their ears are properly cleaned often to prevent this.

Afghan Hound

People are unsure of the origin of Afghan Hounds, but they are thought to have originated in Afghanistan. They have a long, thick coat in addition to their long ears which is also difficult to take care of. These dogs are often around 2 feet high and 60 pounds and are quite dignified and aloof.

American Cocker Spaniel

Many Spaniel Breeds have long ear characteristics that are easily recognizable. Happy and friendly dogs, the Cocker Spaniel is a family favorite breed. They are quite small weighing in around 20 to 30 pounds and are just over a foot tall. Their gorgeous, wavy coat is another defining characteristic of the American Cocker Spaniel.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is second only to the Bloodhound in their tracking abilities. Their long ears are juxtaposed with their short stature and longer body. They are charming dogs as they are adorable, but they are typically more stubborn.

Beagle

Among the most popular dog breeds, beagles are happy and often have excellent attitudes. They are short dogs, lightweight, and have short coats that come in many colors.

Treeing Walker Coonhound

A hunting dog with excellent tracking abilities might have something to do with those long ears. Their distinctive bark helps their human hunters find what they are looking for after tracking the scent down. They are taller dogs that weigh around 60 pounds with short, smooth coats.

Havanese

These dogs are much shorter than many of the other breeds on this list, around 8 inches in height. Their coat is very long and can be curly or straight and comes in a variety of colors. Although they are not hypoallergenic dogs, many owners with allergies are drawn to this dog breed.

These dog breeds are great for hunting, tracking, or simply being a house pet. No matter what dog breed, ensure their ears are cleaned regularly to prevent infections. If interested in one of these long-eared breeds, research further to find the right dog for you and your family.
