How do you know if the trainer you are hiring is the right trainer for you? Finding the right dog trainer can certainly be a hassle. There are no laws or training requirements for anyone who wants to become a dog trainer. Your friendly neighbor could go get a dog and a box of treats and call himself a dog trainer. There are certainly a lot of good dog trainers in the Raleigh area but there are some questionable ones as well!

So how do you know who to choose? The answer is simple. Ask them for a demonstration, consultation and interview. Every dog trainer should not only be willing to discuss your specific training needs and explain what type of results you can expect, but they should be able to SHOW you what they do and demonstrate their training methods with your dog. So, what questions should you ask the trainer?

Here are a few important questions to ask:

  • What method(s) do you use to get the dog to pay attention?
  • What if my dog is not motivated by treats or toys, how do you get his focus then?
  • How do you transfer the training back to the owner so that the dog will listen to me as well?
  • Can you demonstrate your training techniques with my dog?
  • How does the training correct my dog’s behavior?

And most importantly…

  • Can I see you do a demonstration with your dog?

If a trainer does not have control over their own dog, how do they expect to help you with yours? The dog should not only be “controlled” but the dog should be both happy AND obedient.

This is why Sit Means Sit will always come to your home and do a free demonstration and evaluation! Any trainer can say they get results, but we think actions speak much louder than words and would rather show you!
