Fun Facts About Mixed Dog Breeds

No matter your pups breed, you love them just the way they are. With mixed dog breeds, though, you get the fun of having multiple dog breeds all rolled into one adorable pooch. There are countless reasons to adore mixed dogs, but here are just a few of our favorites!

Fewer Health Issues

Since purebred dogs have to mate with their own kind, they usually aren’t too genetically different from one another. When you combine breeds, though, it allows for more genetic mixing. When there are more diverse genes, some of the recessive disorders of certain breeds can be drowned out by the other dominant genes that the dog is mixed with. So essentially, when Fido has a diverse breed background, they’re less likely to inherit the hereditary conditions of their pup parents, so they tend to have fewer health issues as a result.

They Tend to Live Longer

Since mixed pups tend to be healthier than purebred dogs, they also tend to live longer. With a lower chance of developing hereditary disorders that can end their life too soon, mixed dogs typically live to be up to 18 to 20 years old!

Less Expensive

Purchasing a dog from a breeder can get pricey quick. But if you take a stroll to your local shelter, you’ll find canines of all different shapes, sizes, ages, and breeds for little to no cost at all! Plus, adopting a furry friend from a shelter is a great way to give a pup some much-needed love who is desperately in need of it. While the canines at your local shelter might not be purebreds, they’ll love you just as much as one would.

They Look Unique

Dogs that are mixed breeds don’t tend to look like every other pooch on the block. When you hear of a Golden Retriever, you typically have a good idea of what it’ll look like. But when you hear of a Dachshund-Labrador mix, you probably have a hard time picturing it. This is what makes mixed breeds so special; they look unique – even mixed breed puppies in the same litter can come out all looking very different.

There a plenty of reasons to adore mixed pups, but the biggest reason to love them – they’re dogs! Just like any other pups out there, they’re just looking for a happy home full of snuggles.
