Updates to Keep Your New Home Pet Safe

Updates to Keep Your New Home Pet Safe

Moving into a new home typically means an exciting new chapter in your life. You’re able to make all the new changes you’d like or need, especially to make the home pet friendly.

There are alterations you can make to keep your dog happy and healthy, and keep yourself happy with your dog.

Safety

There are plenty of things in a home that can cause injuries for humans and dogs – some more of a nightmare than others. There are a couple of upgrades to make that will ensure a safer home for you and your dog, including:

  • Concealing Trash Cans – Humans waste a lot, much of it hazardous to dogs. Old medicine, razorblades, and plastic are a few of those items that we casually waste. Dogs like to go through trash, which then becomes more dangerous for them. Upgrades such as trash cans under kitchen cabinets would help relieve this issue
  • Reducing Falling Hazards – When playing with your dog, typically they begin to run a lot (aka the zoomies) and knock over furniture or other items. This can cause an injury anywhere for minor to serious, but there is a way to prevent this. Bolting furniture to a wall or floor can prevent this from happening, making this easier for large items that you don’t plan on moving in the near future.

Health

According to multiple studies, dogs improve the mental and physical health of humans, meaning that we should do the same for them. Many older homes have health hazards such as asbestos in the walls that can cause respiratory problems. Your dog sits at home all day, meaning that they will be exposed to it more often. This is a removal that should be done professionally, meaning that you need to make sure that your pet stays in a safe place while this is happening.

Another health issue could be rodents. They are not always obvious, but when lurking in the walls they can make their way into the plumbing system and contaminate your water with feces and other things. Make sure you’re staying vigilant about unusual sounds such as scratching and knocking, usual indicators of their presence. Make sure to be proactive about removing them, and sealing their entrance as well.

Happiness

There are a few upgrades that can make your dog happy in your new home.

  • Comfy Area – Sometimes a few cushions on a floor isn’t always comfy for your pet, especially during the winter once it gets cold. A special area that your dog could lay in would be great for keeping them comfy and cozy. Recently people have been building rooms for their dogs in closets and under stairs with comfy beds, a few toys, and more.
  • Doors – Doors are easily accessible for us as human beings, and they should be just as accessible for your pets. Installing a pet door in your home to your backyard would be great for a dog to get fresh air and go to the bathroom when needed. For safety, installing a pet door that opens only by your dogs microchipped collar would be best.

Pets are family members meaning we should ensure their safety, health, and happiness the way we ensure those things with ourselves. We want to do everything we can for them and enhance their comfort in every way possible.
