Tips for Driving with Dogs

As many dog owners know, some dogs are thrilled to take a spin around with you, whether it be a five minute drive to the supermarket or a two hour drive to the beach. Others, though, resent car rides, which can be inconvenient and time-consuming. Here’s what you can do to keep your dog happy (and safe!) on car rides!

Don’t Leave Them Alone

Even if you’re just leaving them in the car for fifteen minutes, your dog’s brain can quickly become damaged in extremely hot conditions. Be aware of the temperature outside and don’t leave your dog alone in the car when it’s too hot or cold outside! If you know you’ll be away from the car for a while, you’re better off dropping your dog off at home or with a friend for a while. It’s worth it to keep them safe!

Let them Adjust

Most dogs aren’t born naturally loving car rides! It takes patience on your end to allow your dog to adjust to drives. Start them early by driving your dog home with you after adopting them. Bring a family member or friend to cuddle them and tell them reassuring things throughout the drive. This will help ease them into the concept of being in a car while it’s moving. If they have positive associations with car rides, they’ll be much more easygoing about them later in life!

Use a Safety Harness or Crate

It may seem excessive, but putting your dog in a crate or a safety harness will keep them much safer if you’re ever involved in a car accident. Keeping them restrained will also allow you to focus on the road without them roaming around and distracting you. It can be difficult to keep a rowdy pup still, especially if they’re excited about being in the car. Holding them back with a harness or crate is an excellent safety precaution!

Come Prepared

Especially on long car rides, you should bring all of your dog’s goodies. If they get anxious on the road, bring a comforting blanket or toy. If car-sickness is a recurring problem, don’t forget the meds! When it comes to car rides with your dog, never leave the house without your portable dog bowl, some water, and a few snacks. You never know when you might need it!

Bringing your dog along for a car ride is a fun treat for them to enjoy with you. Especially with busy lifestyles, it can be a great way to bond with your four-legged friend. Follow these tips to enjoy you and your dog’s car rides even more!
