Dog Safety Tip: Protect Your Pup in Cold Weather

Dog Safety Tip: Protect Your Pup in Cold WeatherAs the cold weather sets in, it’s very important for pet owners to take the proper precautions to protect our furry friends. This is precisely why we’re devoting today’s post to protecting pets in the winter months. While some of these tips are more obvious than other, we urge you to take each into account this winter.

Avoid Overexposure to Cold Temperatures

Even if your dog loves the winter weather, keep in mind that over exposure to extreme temperatures can be hazardous to their health. If your pup is an outdoor pet, make sure to provide a dry shelter that protects them from drafts and precipitation. The shelter should be large enough to house them comfortably but small enough to hold their body temperature in on cold nights. If your dog is an indoor dog, allow them enough time outdoors every day to exercise but don’t leave them outside for excessive amounts of time.

Watch for Salt

After the first snow, salt is prevalent on sidewalks and streets. Keep in mind that salt can be harmful to your pet’s paws and take extra precautions to protect them. After taking them for a walk or allowing them outside, wipe your pet’s paws down with a damp cloth. This will remove all salt and chemical residue.

Be Cautious of Wild Animals

There are threats of wild animals year round throughout the state Colorado. Winter is no exception. Watch for wild animals that may feel threatened by or wish to harm your pet. When cold weather conditions are most extreme, food sources are depleted and predators are often more aggressive. Keep this in mind as you take your pets out and/or allow them to be outside on their own.

Keep Antifreeze Out of Reach

Antifreeze is poisonous and often lethal to dogs. Its sweet taste however makes it enticing. This is why it’s so important to store antifreeze out of reach of animals and small children. If your pup ingests antifreeze or other harsh chemicals, contact your vet immediately.
