Preparing for a Puppy
The holidays are upon us and for many families, a new puppy is on the shopping list. If you are lucky enough to be preparing for a puppy, it’s important to remember that a lot of responsibility comes with all of the excitement! At Sit Means Sit South Denver we proudly offer dog training to area residents from Littleton to Highlands Ranch. As your area experts in dog training, we encourage you to take these tips to heart as you prepare to welcome a new member to your family.
Puppies Need Structure
Just like human babies, puppies thrive on a structured schedule. As they learn and grow, it’s important for them to have the security of a set schedule and clearly defined boundaries. From the time you bring your new puppy home, begin working on getting them used to your schedule. Even if you are enjoying time off for the holidays, begin waking at the same time every day. Take your puppy straight out to their designated potty area and begin your day as you will every other day moving forward. Your puppy will quickly adapt and even begin to enjoy the structure.
Crate Training
While many dog owners fear that crate training is stifling to a pup, this could not be further from the truth. Dogs love having their own designated space, a crate serves as both a training tool and a sanctuary for your pup. It will help them gain bladder control and learn to use their own toys when teething, all while providing a sense of security. Just imagine how overwhelming an open space can be for a small puppy when left alone. Not only will it protect them, it will protect your property.
Obedience Training Begins Early
Puppydom is the perfect time to begin your Littleton dog training program. Your growing puppy will be eager to learn, so take advantage of this special time in their development. First work on the basics of house training, sitting in ‘place’ and coming when called. Once you have mastered these skills, you can move on to more advanced obedience work. If you are looking at group classes learn how to get the most out of dog training group classes here.
Consistency is Essential
Consistency is just as important with dogs as it is in our every day lives. Mastering a new skill or reaching a goal takes time and determination. If you aim to teach your pup obedience skills, it will require dedication on the part of you and your dog. Set ground rules from the very beginning and stick to them! If you do not intend to allow your dog on furniture when they are grown, resist the urge to allow your puppy on the couch even when they are small. As you begin to master skills together, continue to practice them. You will be amazed at your dog’s ability accept and respond to the boundaries you set.
