How To Train Dogs To Ride in Your Car

Obedience Training in Littleton: Teaching Your Pup to be a Good Car PassengerTraveling in your car with your pup should not be a stressful experience for either you or your dog. From summer car trips to outdoor adventures, there is no need to miss out on good times together due to anxiety or bad behavior. If you find it frustrating to take your dog along for car rides, a little car training might be in order. Here at Sit Means sit, we proudly offer obedience training in Littleton, CO and the surrounding areas. If you and your pup need a little brush up on car manners, here are a few tips:

Entering the Vehicle

Always take the time to walk your dog up to the car and have them sit before entering. It may be necessary to have your dog on a leash during this exercise, especially in the beginning. Insist that your dog remains ‘in place’ as you open the doors and ready the vehicle for them to enter. It is best for your dog’s safety to have some sort of restraint during their car ride, consider a kennel or a dog safety belt. One you’re ready, allow your pet to enter the vehicle and get into their restraint. Restraints can cut down on bad behavior and give your pup a sense of security.

Exiting the Vehicle

When you reach your destination, again practice the sit command when your pup exits the vehicle. This ensures that you have their full attention and keeps them from being distracted by cars, people and even other dogs. Once you have completed this process several times, and your dog has mastered the car exit, you can consider allowing them to enter and exit the car off leash.

Potty Breaks

If you are traveling a significant distance, be sure to allow your dog to go potty before entering the vehicle and stop regularly to allow them to stretch their legs, have a drink and relieve themselves. Use your best judgment on timing, if your pup is used to going out several times a day, plan to stop on a similar schedule.

Drive with Caution

Dogs, like small children, can be easily jostled by sudden movements. Even if your pup is restrained, it is still important to drive with extra caution when they are passengers in your vehicle. If you expect your dog to be a good passenger, it is up to you to be a safe and cautious driver. Check out these safety tips for driving with dogs.

Have Fun!

By giving your dog boundaries, when entering and exiting the car, as well as during travel, you are giving them much needed security. When they understand how they are expected to behave, they are at ease. When both you and your pup are relaxed, you’re sure to have a great trip together. Whether you’re running across town, or driving cross country, these simple tips will make your journey a fun one.
