Why Are Some Dogs Afraid of Thunder? & What You Can Do!

We don’t like seeing our companion scared and upset because of circumstances we can’t control. So, read below to learn why dogs are afraid of thunder and what you can do to help them!

Why Are Dogs Scared of Thunder?

Just like humans, different dogs have different fears, phobias, and triggers that make them scared or stressed. Your furry friend may be sensitive to the noise or be scared of the rain and lightning. Additionally, dogs can sense a drop in the barometric pressure before a storm. This “sixth sense” can cause anxiety before the thunder even arrives. So, your companion can become fearful and anxious when paired with dark skies, wind, noise, and lightning.

This anxiety can cause destructive behavior in some dogs. Or, they may pace, whine, bark, or hide. But, this is not a fear that they grow out of. So they need your help!

What Can I do To Help?

Thunder Shirt

Thunder shirt help to calm your dog through the use of pressure points. However, they work better for some pups than others.

Supplements

Talk with your vet about medications and supplements that are designed to calm your canine. They will be able to recommend the best option for your four-legged friend.

Safe Space

Another way to help with your companion’s anxiety is to create a safe space for them. This could be their crate or a quiet room in the house. To make this their space, complete it with their bed, blankets, pillows, water, and toys. Additionally, you can play calming music or turn on the tv to help drown out the thunder. Just be sure that their safe space is puppy proofed!

Stay Calm

Your dog can sense your emotions and feelings. So, stay calm during the storm. Do not make a fuss over the thunder and lightning. Wanting to comfort them is natural. However, making a big deal over them will reinforce the feeling that they have something to be worried about. You can distract your dog with toys, games, music, or the TV. Just act like it is another normal day to keep your furry friend calm!

Can I Desensitize My Dog To Thunder?

Yes, it is possible though it can be tricky. You can work with a dog trainer for the best results. However, keep in mind that their fear will just be lessened, not completely gone.

To desensitize them, gradually increase the stimuli until your canine becomes more comfortable with it. You can play thunderstorm sounds from a Youtube video while playing a game they love, giving them their favorite toy, or rewarding them with treats and attention. Then, when a real storm rolls around, pair the storm with the same thing that they love.

Follow the tips above to help keep curb your furry friends anxiety during the next thunder storm!
