Tips for Walking Fido in the Rain

Going on daily walks can be very important for a dog’s health, as well as its energy levels.  However, on rainy days, outdoor walks can be less than enjoyable.

Here are our tips for walking Fido in the rain.

Check the Weather

If you know rain is the forecast, keep a close eye on the weather to look for pockets of lighter or no rain where you could take your pup out.

Going outside during storms that include thunder, lighting, or high winds can be dangerous so it’s best to anticipate that weather so you can take your pet outside before things start getting bad outside.

Dog Raincoat

When you have to take your pup out in the rain, you probably put on your raincoat and rain boots to help keep you dry. But what about Fido? Don’t let your pet get all wet and cold in the rain. Invest in a raincoat that will help to keep them as dry as possible while they do their business.

Wear Bright or Reflective Colors

As the rain comes down, visibility for passing cars can be low. A life-saving measure you can take is to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing that is going to be more easily spotted in low lighting to ensure that you are visible to any drivers going by.

Keep the Walk Short

While you may usually enjoy a nice long stroll with your pup, during the rain, there are an increased number of risks. You can help to avoid these risks by keeping your walk as short as possible. All you need to do is let Fido do their business and then head back inside.

Don’t Let Fido Drink Rainwater

While Fido may be thinking that they are thirsty and there is water all around them, rainwater is filled with dirt and bacteria that can be very harmful to your pet. If Fido often gets thirsty on your walks, bring a water bottle and a portable dog bowl with you for when they start feeling parched.

When you get back from your walk, your pup might be a little dirty so here are our tips for keeping your dog clean after a muddy walk.

As long as you remember to keep safety your number one priority while on your walks, you and Fido should be able to still have a good walk in the rain.
