Housebreaking Relapse

Sit Means Sit Waukesha offers training programs and classes for puppies and adult dogs alike in the Waukesha and North Milwaukee. We think an obedient dog is a happy dog and we can help dogs be obedient. Our system works on all breeds and all ages. We help dogs with problems such as jumping and barking, chewing and digging, and biting and aggression. We offer advice and help for dogs with housebreaking problems too. This blog will deal with older dogs who have been housebroken and have relapsed into accidents. Ruling out other factors

  • The first thing to investigate is if there is a medical reason that your dog has started having accidents. A urinary tract infection, for example can cause a dog to have trouble with bladder control.
  • Is your dog very old and so normal aging bladder control issues might be at work. Talk to your vet to see if there is a medication that can help.
  • Has the carpet or flooring been completely cleaned? If the dog smells odors of old accidents he or she is more likely to go there.

Solutions

  • Pay close attention to when and where your dog
  • Limiting your dog’s before-bed water (and food) access is a good start to figuring out what is going on with your dog. Pick up the water 3-4 hours before bedtime.
  • Take the time for one last outdoor break before bedtime.
  • Crating your dog during the times when you’ve noticed that the accidents are occurring.
