Picking the Right Breed 2/3

In our last blog, we started a conversation about picking the best breed for you. We’re going to continue that topic today because choosing the right breed can make the difference between happy with your dog or not. Sit Means Sit can help you with obedience classes but if your dog is not of the temperament that fits with your, you still might not be as happy as you should be with your dog.

One of the most important factors you need to consider when choosing a breed is its intelligence. Dogs like Border Collies, Blue Heelers, Retrievers and German Shepherds are all among the smartest breeds. These dogs are highly teachable and like to be kept busy and to be given a job to do. If they are not given a purpose these breeds can get bored and destructive. Dogs that have a reputation for being, shall we say, less smart are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Beagles, Mastiffs and Bulldogs. There are advantages of having one of these dogs. I joke that dogs can’t tell time, but these dogs really can’t so they won’t notice as much if you are gone all day as say, a Blue Heeler. They can be a bit difficult to train because they don’t readily pick up on who is in charge. These dogs are less adaptable than smart dogs so if you want a dog to take along to experience new things, consider a smarter breed.

Whatever breed you choose Sit Means Sit Waukesha can help you and your dog be happy. Your dog wants to please you and he or she just needs to be taught what to do and we can help.
