Everything You Need to Know About Akitas

If you are looking for a new addition to the family, here is everything you need to know about Akitas!

Basics

Akitas are working dogs that can weigh 70-130 pounds, be 24-28 inches tall, and live 10-12 years. The breed was originally used for protection, tracking, and hunting. Additionally, the breed is not recommended for beginner owners.

Temperament

Akitas are fearless and loyal companions. They don’t frighten easily and don’t back down from challenges. However, they are also affectionate and fun dogs when trained and socialized correctly. They are not too friendly to strangers or other dogs. But, they will shower you and your family with so much love! Additionally, the breed tends to be chatty and frequently grunts, moans, and mumbles.

Physical Needs

Akitas are playful and have a lot of energy, but they are not hyper. They need plenty of exercises to stay happy and healthy! Otherwise, a lonely and bored pup can be destructive and aggressive. With that being said, they need adequate socialization and training. Socializing your pal with other dogs and people is important. If not, Akitas tend to have aggression towards other dogs, especially those of the same sex. Additionally, training your Akita yourself is important too to reinforce the loyal bond between the two of you. Though the breed is smart, they can be stubborn when it comes to training. Also, a fenced yard is important for the safety of your pal and strangers.

Health And Grooming

Akitas are overall generally healthy. However,  they are prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, hypothyroidism, sebaceous adenitis, and progressive retinal atrophy. Additionally, they shed a lot and require regular grooming. That also means you will need to do a lot of vacuuming. Also, they have a high drooling potential. So, keep that in mind if you are thinking about adding an Akita to the family.

Consider all of the characteristics and needs of an Akita to determine if they are the right fit for you and your family!
