How Dogs Show Love

How Your Dog Says “I Love You”

We show our dogs love every day whether it be through a walk in the park, a new toy, or a couple extra cookies when they look at you with that sweet face.  Have you ever wondered if your dog feels the same way about you? Dog’s show their love in different ways, and not all are as obvious as you might think!

Facial Expressions

Generally, people think that a wagging tail is the tell all sign that your dog is happy and affectionate, but a lot can be determined from subtle facial expression. A study in Japan put this to the test by introducing dogs to an item or person they were familiar with followed by strangers and items they disliked.

When the dog saw a familiar face, they shifted their left ear back, and when introduced to a stranger, they shifted their right ear. Similarly, when introduced to someone they bonded with they displayed significantly more movement in their eyebrows.

Excited To See You When You Come Home

One of the best parts about coming home from a long day of work is knowing that your dog is there to greet you. Your pup probably feels the same way! Rushing to meet you with a wagging tail and toy in their mouth are all signs that your dog adores you and is happy to have you home!

Eye Contact

There’s a special bond that occurs when a dog and owner look each other in the eye. Similar to the way a new born baby bonds with their mother, looking into your dog’s eye releases a hormone called oxytocin. This hormone is commonly known as the “cuddle hormone” or “love hormone”. Rather than engaging in a staring contest with your dog, maintain eye contact with them throughout the day and see how they respond.

Yawning

We all know that yawning can be contagious. Did you know that dogs experience the same sensation? A recent study shows that yawning indicates empathy in humans, and because humans are empathetic, we can sense a yawn in our peers.

We can’t measure empathy in dogs but it’s likely that yawning symbolizes a bond to their owner. A dog is more likely to yawn if they see their owner yawn as opposed to a stranger. Give it a try next time you and your dog are hanging out!

There are plenty of scientific ways to tell if your dog loves you, but the best is to trust your gut! All dogs are unique, and you know your dog better than anyone. Whether they run in circles when you get home or cuddle up to you on the couch, you’re probably your dog’s #1 human!
